Wilkerson
Wins In Houston
SPRINGFIELD, Ill.,
April 20, 2004 - In Funny Car, Tim Wilkerson scored his
fourth career win and the second consecutive victory for
the Chevy Monte Carlo, backing up Phil Burkart's win two
weeks ago at Las Vegas. He came into final eliminations
as the No. 2 qualifier, and he bested Bob Gilbertson in
Round 1, Eric Medlen in Round 2, and then had a classic
dual with points leader Del Worsham in the semis, a holeshot
win of 4.964 seconds to a slightly quicker Worsham at 4.963
for a .0023 margin of victory.
"I just can't say enough about the guys, putting this car together," said
Wilkerson. "We go up and down the racetrack and had the same motor in the
car all weekend, and I think that's a pretty good deal for a Top Fuel Funny Car.
And what about Del Worsham - is he a competitor or what? Any time you beat the
points leader it's a good day."
"Every time we race Tim it's neck-and-neck, a matter of inches, and we've
been fortunate to be on the good side of the inches a lot of times," said
Worsham. "You know one thing when you race him, it's going to be close.
It was so close I really thought we won. We like those guys, they're good guys,
but both teams wanted to win and both deserved to. We had a good weekend, and
we wish we could have gone to the final, but you can't be too down when you run
that well and the other guy beats you by an eyelash."
